Zaza Gagua of Vino Martville is a native Georgian and he’s producing some of the most stunning natural wines from the region while holding fast to Georgia’s traditional winemaking methods that have been in use for over thousands of years. Juice is fermented and aged in ‘qvevri,’ which are clay vessels buried underground. Gagua’s vineyards are in Martvili, a town in Western Georgia, south of the Caucasus Mountains and near the Black Sea, where the mountainous climate and the humid sea air create a fertile environment for winemaking. He works 0.5 hectares with organic methods, producing all indigenous Georgian varietals but it’s his Aladasturi grapes that are the most special. Aladasturi is a very rare and almost extinct dark skinned grape. But Gagua is making sure they’re enjoyed now more than ever and this 2018 ‘Aladasturi’ is a celebration of that dedication, letting this ancient grape speak its own truths. This ‘Aladasturi’ is bottled unfined, unfiltered and without any added sulfites. It has a beautiful deep red color and intense red fruit flavors on the palate. A stunning example of tradition.
