In his native region of Rueda, Spain, winemaker Ismael Gozalo is known as ‘El Mago de las Verdejos’ (the Magician of Verdejo). Verdejos are the indigenous varietal of Gozalo’s village where his family has been farming for five generations. Gozalo’s Verdejos grow on pre-phylloxera ungrafted vines, some of them dating all the way back to 1748—this fact alone already makes Gonzalo’s wines very rare but even the soil is special. The sand, limestone, slate, and clay mix is from a prehistoric mountain range over 170 million-years-old. “Nature and Process” is Gozalo’s mantra when it comes to winemaking. He uses as little intervention as possible and is dedicated to biodynamic methods, letting the Verdejo and its beautiful terroir sing. Gozalo shares with us the wonders of his home through his wines, a true treasure.
This 2018 ‘La Resistencia’ is made from 100% Verdejo, aged in amphora which gives the wine a great textural element. It’s unfined, unfiltered, with no added sulphites. Salud!
