Julien Albertus of Kumpf et Meyer makes his wines as naturally as possible in a local cave on the outskirts of Rosheim—its cool climate perfect for production. In this region of Alsace, near the German border, aromatic wines reign supreme. Gewürztraminer, one of the most produced local varietals translates to ‘Perfumed Traminer.’ It also happens to be one of the varietals that Albertus has mastered. Since 2012, he’s been growing them biodynamically with as little intervention as possible, letting the grapes tell their own story. And those stories are rich—some of Albertus’ vines that date back all the way to the 17th century. This ‘Utopiste’ is a beautiful expression of Albertus’ passion for his Alsace vines. 100% Gewürztraminer grown in the clay and limestone hillsides before being hand harvested at full maturity. Macerated on its skins for fifteen days and aged a full year. Bottled without any additional sulphites. This orange wine is both gorgeous and explosive with lightly musky exotic fruit and dry honey on the palate.
