- Other Information: Clos Fantine is making some of the most authentic, ‘free,’ and living wines in France’s natural wine movement, particularly with their vibrant reds. This three sibling team is made up of Carole, Corinne, and Olivier Andrieu, who believe in listening, watching, and communicating with nature. This philosophy directly influences their winemaking, where they’re dedicated to preserving the power and strength of their grapes so the juice can deliver its own message. Located in Cabrerolles in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, the Clos Fantine estate is made up of vineyards the Andrieu siblings inherited from their father, who happened to be a pioneer in organic viticulture. Their 25 hectares haven’t seen fertilizers or chemicals for several decades now and a majority of their vineyards are over 100 years old. Clos Fantine mostly grows Carignans, which flourish in Cabrerolles, but also Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and a little Cinsault. Here’s some fun facts about Clos Fantine: The Andrieu siblings invite a flock of sheep to graze on their plots every year. And honoring family traditions, the siblings live and make wine in the house where their grandmother was born. All fermentation occurs with the natural yeast strains derived from the grapes and the wines are never filtered. This ‘Fantome’ is made with Carignan, which tends to produce heavy red juice but it’s blended with Genache Gris, a white varietal that brings lightness to this wine.
